Meet Sophie Jonas-Hill

In our Positively Puzzling spring/summer edition we caught up with Sophie Jonas-Hill, who has recently joined the Ravensburger family of artists with her image, Fashionably Late.  We talked to Sophie about what inspired the piece, how she creates her illustrations and much more. As always with our wonderful artists, we had so much to talk about that we couldn’t fit it all in the magazine! Here you can read more about how Sophie’s design process.

Behind the artwork

Sophie: I usually sketch out an idea in pencil first, then when I'm happy with it I will lay a piece of heavyweight tracing paper over it and trace my pencil line in black ink, rather like the lead work on a stained glass window. Then I'll flip that ink drawing over and add colour on the back. I do this because I use alcohol ink marker pens, and they will smudge the black ink on the tracing paper if I touch them, so drawing on the reverse prevents that from happening. Because I don't have to worry about smudging the black in, I can blend the colours more freely and layer them up, they can almost act like watercolours at times because I'm using them on such a smooth surface, though they dry much faster.

Then I'll flip the drawing back to the right side, place a second piece of tracing paper over it, and use deep colours to shade in the shadows, paying no mind to the black lines but just trying to give the image dramatic shading. When that's done, I slip the shadow layer under the original drawing.

Finally, I use a matt white ink pen to add white highlights and detailing to the front of the image. With the artwork for something like the Ravensburger piece, I then draw all the other elements that surround the main image, scan everything and collage them together digitally, because it's important to get the colour balance and composition absolutely perfect and so create the best puzzle possible.
