Unusual Origins Story

Scotland Yard was developed by a six-person project team from the former Otto Maier publishing company. Editorial manager Werner Schlegel brought together colleagues from different departments, including product development, engineering, purchasing, graphic design, and game editing. Together, they represented all the key disciplines involved in creating a board game.

In June 1979, the team was tasked with developing a game about travelling around the world. However, after just a few months, the concept evolved into a manhunt. What began as a hunting game eventually transformed into the thrilling detective game known today as Scotland Yard.

Mister X’s Global Escape – From London via Switzerland to Tokyo

Scotland Yard soon had to expand its search for the Invisible Man beyond London. Over the years, Mister X has been spotted escaping through Switzerland, travelling along the canals of Venice, crossing Italy, and even appearing in Tokyo. At times, players have also chased him through New York and across Europe.

Today, Scotland Yard is available in more than 50 countries and continues to captivate detectives around the world with its thrilling pursuit of Mister X.
