Why play Villainous?

Villainous is much more than just its licenses. It’s a deep, nuanced strategy board game with immersive storytelling that just happens to feature your favourite villains.

Asymmetric strategy - every villain plays differently

Every single villain has their own unique objective and abilities. They have their own deck. They even have their own board. This means there’s a huge range of possibilities, even just using base pack characters - a game with the same characters can play out completely differently every time.

Top quality Ravensburger components

Villainous is designed to look amazing, and it’s built to last. With every Villainous set, you get gorgeously evil artwork, beautifully sculpted pieces and tough, long-lasting cards for a lifetime of dramatic gaming.

Easy to learn, hard to master

Follow the instructions in the box or the videos on our site, and you can be up and running in a few minutes. But the more you play, the more you’ll start to plumb the depths of strategy available. You’ll learn about the characters’ strengths and weaknesses. You’ll start to plan ahead and anticipate your opponent's moves. And eventually you’ll become the villain you were always destined to be.

Choose your Villainous

There’s more to Villainous than just picking your favourite baddie and diving in. There are three different versions - Disney, Star Wars and Marvel - each with its own unique themes, rules and expansion packs. Not to mention villains.

It’s important to remember that you can’t mix and match - you can’t play Star Wars Villainous with Disney, or with Marvel.

You can play Villainous with just one of the base sets, but when you get into it more, you can add expansion packs. These include extra villains and objectives to keep the game fresh and exciting. Some also work as standalone games (or expandalones), so if there’s a particular villain you’re dying to play as, you don’t necessarily have to start with a base set.

Villainous is an asymmetrical board game, which means each villain has their own board, their own objectives and their own skills. So you’ll need to think strategically and plan ahead to make sure you get that win…

Disney Villainous

Disney Villainous is where it all started. The very first game - Disney Villainous: The Worst Takes It All - launched in 2018, and there’s a whole range of base sets and expansions to choose from today.

Introduction to Evil is a great way to get into Disney Villainous, with four classic villains, balanced for fun, competitive play. You can pick Maleficent, Captain Hook, Ursula or Prince John, each with their own unique abilities and goals to complete.

Then you can choose from awesome expansion and expandalone sets like Treacherous Tides, Sugar and Spite and Evil Comes Prepared. They’ll add fun new villains to play as including Davey Jones, Shere Kahn and Scar.

Marvel Villainous

The first Marvel Villainous base set, Infinite Power, came out a couple of years later in 2020. There were a few changes to the game mechanics to work with the different villains and heroes from the Marvel Universe, so you’ll now find a single deck of heroes rather than having villain-specific heroes.

Infinite Power is still a superb way to get started with the Marvel Villainous board game, with five awesome villains including Thanos, Ultron and Hela. Expansions and Expandalones like Mischief and Malice, We Are Venom and Twisted Ambitions add more villains like Loki, Venom and Doctor Octopus.

Star Wars Villainous

The most recent addition to the Villainous collection is Star Wars. And yes, you can play as Darth Vader. The Power of the Dark Side base set launched in 2022 and features the legendary Sith lord himself, along with Kylo Ren, General Grievous, Asajj Ventress and Moff Gideon.

Of course, there’s a wealth of Star Wars villains, so there are some great expansions and expandalones to choose from too. Fancy stepping into Boba Fett’s bounty hunter boots? You need Scum and Villainy. Want to twirl Darth Maul’s infamous double-ended lightsaber? No problem, just pick up Revenge at Last.

Frequently asked questions

Want to know more about Villainous? You’ve come to the right place.

What is the Villainous board game?

Villainous is a strategic board game series including Disney Villainous, Marvel Villainous and Star Wars Villainous. You’ll take on the role of an iconic villain with their own unique abilities and objectives. It’s asymmetric, which means each character has their own board and deck, and each one plays differently for great replayability.

Do I need a base set to play Villainous?

Not necessarily. Every base set is a complete standalone game in its own right, and some of the expansions (known as ‘expandalones’ can also be played independently.

Can you mix Disney, Marvel and Star Wars Villainous?

No. Disney Villainous, Marvel Villainous, and Star Wars Villainous are separate versions of the game, each with its own rules and gameplay mechanics, designed specifically for their respective universes. You can’t mix and match between them.

How many players can play Villainous?

Villainous base sets work with 2-4 players. Expandalone sets follow the same rules but contain fewer villains, so you’ll be limited to how many villains are in the set.

What age is Villainous suitable for?

Villainous is designed for ages 10 and up. The rules are straightforward to learn, and the asymmetric strategy and unique villain objectives add depth, making it perfect for families with older children and experienced board gamers alike.
